Foss Maritime Welcomes The Lillian Foss

The renewed 70-ton Lillian Foss tugboat returns to the Foss fleet

Foss Maritime christened the Lillian Foss into its fleet yesterday in Long Beach, CA. The former Rich Padden came out of drydock in Southern California in December where it was renamed.

This is not the first time a Foss tug has been named after Lillian Foss, daughter of founders Thea and Andrew Foss. Lillian, the third of five children assisted Thea Foss in the Foss store, boardinghouse, and kitchen during the early years of Foss Tug & Barge in Tacoma, Washington. A graduate of Stadium High School in Tacoma, Lillian worked side by side with her mother to ensure the business was “Always Ready”. In 1914 at the age of 25, Lillian passed due to tuberculosis. Foss Maritime is honored to welcome back the Lillian Foss to the fleet in Southern California where it will assist ships in the LA/Long Beach ports.

“The addition of the Lillian Foss to the fleet carries on the legacy of our founders, Thea and Andrew Foss,” said Foss Maritime California GM, Henry Palmer. “Lillian will join her brothers Andrew Foss, Henry Foss and Wedell Foss in the fleet. The Lillian Foss is an excellent complement to Foss’ three ASD-90 tugs that were built and put into service over the last two years to satisfy the requirements we believe will soon be required of the rest of the country and the world,” added Palmer.
