A Second Z-Tech® 6500 tug for ICDAS

In mid October 2018, ICDAS Turkey completed construction of its second Z-Tech® 6500 tug, the KARA YUSUF-2, which will operate in Çanakkale Turkey. After successful construction and operation in 2011 of the ICDAS-19, the first Z-Tech® 6500 tug of its fleet, ICDAS decided to build a second one.

Z-Tech® designs are outstanding for the safe and capable operation of ship-handling service with large ships, particularly of those with extreme flares at ends.

Particulars of Kara Yusuf 2 are:

  • Length, overall: 27.40 m
  • Beam, moulded: 12.20 m
  • Depth, moulded: 5.05 m
  • Maximum draft: 5.25 m
  • Gross Tonnage: 352

The tug was designed and constructed to satisfy all applicable Rules and Regulations of:

  • NK Rules to the Class Notation of NS* (CS) (TUG) (IWS) / MNS*

Tank capacities are as follows:

  • Fuel oil: 124 m3
  • Potable water: 11 m3

Trials results were as follows:

  • Bollard pull, ahead: 65 tonnes
  • Free running speed, ahead: 12.5 knots

The vessel has been designed to the highest standards of outfitting for a normal operating crew of six. The Master and Chief Engineer’s cabin, along with galley and mess, are located on the main deck. There are two double cabins located on the lower deck.

The deck machinery comprises a hydraulic towing winch DWF 35x130H on the bow, spooled with 200 m of Ø56 tow line. An independent anchor windlass is provided on aft deck. Rescue boat and davit is provided and located on bridge deck.

Main propulsion for each tug comprises a pair of MTU 16V4000M63 diesel engines, each rated at 2000 kW at 1800 rpm, and driving a Rolls Royce US 205 FP, Ø2500 Z-drive unit. The electrical plant consists of two identical Deutz, BF6M1013M diesel gen-sets, each with a power output of 112 eKw 400 v, 3-Ph, 50 Hz.

Ship-handling fenders at the bow consist of one tier of 800 OD x 400 ID with one 400 OD x 200 ID cylindrical fender at the main deck level, 480 x 300 W-Block fenders below the cylindrical fender; and 300 x 300 D type fenders along the sheer lines of main deck; 400 OD x 200 ID fendering is used at the stern.
